Want to add some FUN to your geometry unit with a fun, printable shape monster activity? Get creative juices flowing with this 1st or 2nd grade project that includes worksheets, printable templates and more. Your geometry unit has never been so fun!
Prepping the Shape Monster
Print out templates with shapes of different sizes on your favorite Astrobright colors. (or, print them all on white and allow students time to color each shape in crayon)
I like to use: circles, ovals, rectangles, trapezoids, squares, hexagons and octagons.
We use different sizes for the head, arms, legs, feet, hands, ears, eyes and more.
Creating the Shape Monster
Let students get CREATIVE.
Give them an entire day (or large chunk of time) to create their monsters.
Let them use lots of colors and objects to create their monsters.
Graphing Component
Have students practice making charts and graphs about their shape monsters.
Students can make a chart to create an inventory of the shapes they used for their monster.
Then, students can make a bar and pictograph about what shapes they used for their particular monster.
Challenge students to count the TOTAL number of sides and angles that their shape monster has.
Writing Component
After students have completed their chart and graphs, students can write a descriptive piece about their shape monster.
Start with the facts including shapes and colors used to create the shape monster.
Let students get creative by writing about interests, likes and dislikes that their shape monster has.
Interactive Bulletin Board (optional)
Create a FUN interactive bulletin board by hanging up the shape monsters separate from their writing pieces.
See if other students can FIND their classmates’ shape monsters.
This is GREAT for parent teacher conferences!
TIP: Have students end their writing with “can you find my shape monster?” to bring the project full circle.
