I love to pair this adorable read aloud with a craft where students make their own Love Monster and then write all about it.
This book is excellent for any classroom unable to directly discuss Valentine’s Day but still wanting to discuss love and acceptance.
Grumpy Groundhog
Are your students team winter or team spring?
Grumpy Groundhog is a cute story about the groundhog who does NOT want to get out of his warm cozy bed. The town is all gathered and trying to convince him to come out!
I love to use this to launch into an opinion writing piece the week before Groundhog’s Day where students persuade others if Winter or Spring is better and why.
Groundhog Gets a Say
If people were only interested in what you said once a YEAR would you be upset?
So is groundhog! Groundhog Gets a Say is a book about a groundhog trying to prove to others that he is useful for more than just seeing his shadow or not once a year.
I love to use this book to launch an All About Groundhogs research project the week of Groundhog’s Day.
Mr. Goat’s Valentine
Mr. Goat’s Valentine is a tale about a goat who wants to make Valentine’s Day absolutely perfect.
He goes above and beyond to get all of her favorite things. Mr. Goat gets flowers, a card, writes a song and more… all for his MOM!
This cute story is a great way to launch into making a special Valentine for a loved one.
I love to pair it with The Sweetest Person writing craft where students write a persuasive piece about the sweetest person and give reasons WHY they are so sweet.
Harvey the Heart Had Too Many Farts
Are you looking for a FUNNY best friend tale?
Harvey the Heart Had Too Many Farts is a funny story about a farting heart that is finally accepted by his new best friend, who thinks his farts are awesome.
You do need to have a class that can handle this humor, so this book might not work EVERY year, but done correctly, this is a cute and funny story sure to get students to love reading.
The Littlest Valentine
Emma is The Littlest Valentine.
She wants Valentine’s Day to be perfect but doesn’t seem to be able to do things the same way as the bigger people in her family.
Will she still be able to make Valentine’s Day special?
This cute book is perfect to add to your February read alouds.
How to Catch the Tooth Fairy
With February being dental health month, How to Catch the Tooth Fairy is a cute and fun way to address that.
Students can read aloud this cute story about catching the tooth fairy.
Afterward, students can discuss a few things. First, I love to allow students to be creative and write about how they would catch the tooth fairy. Alternatively, you can have students discuss how to take care of their teeth.
Either way, this book is a MUST HAVE for your February read alouds.
If I Were President
President’s Day is always the third Monday in February.
If I Were President is a fun book about all the responsibilities a president has while also adding in the fun things presidents get to do.
Have students learn about presidents while imagining what life would be like as a president. Give students the writing prompt “My Day As The President…” and learn all about what they would do!
Duck for President
Celebrating President’s Day can also be fun.
Duck for President is a fun way for students to learn about HOW someone becomes the president in a silly way.
This is great for a conversation on elections, but also is great for an opinion writing prompt. Who should be in charge.. Duck or Farmer Brown?
Duck for President is a great way to talk about WHO the current president is and to do a quick writing project about them.
Grace for President
Grace is upset when she hears that there has never been a woman president. She decides to run for class president against the popular boy in her class.
This book is a perfect addition to your February read alouds for President’s Day. Both boys and girls will love this heartwarming tale about Grace, who aspires to be president of the USA one day.
Grace for President is another a great way to launch a research project about the current president. Pair it with a fun, patriotic craft as well for a great bulletin board.
